Rafaat is a long standing women’s rights activist. She has worked for various local authorities and has trained front line service providers across the UK on race, equality and diversity issues. Rafaat was one of the first Muslim women to be elected in the borough of Haringey as a Councillor and in fact was one of the first Muslim women to be elected in the UK. She was the Chair of the Ethnic Minority Consultative Committee and an Assistant Whip. In addition, she also sat on various committees including Planning, Fostering & Adoption, Housing and Education, advocating for the needs of BAME communities. In 1989, Rafaat founded JAN Trust to educate and engage grassroots disadvantaged women. Over the years, she has led the organisation from strength to strength and has served and assisted thousands of women to become empowered, active UK citizens and has increased their independence in society.
