Report highlights lack of diversity in top council jobs

Only 9% of council leaders and 14% of local authority chief executives in Wales are female, a new report has found.

A lack of diversity in the top council jobs in Wales has been highlighted in a new report published on International Women’s Day.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission also found that just over a quarter (26%) of councillors in Wales are women.

The Who Run Wales? 2017 report also reported that disabled people made up only 3.7% of public appointments in 2015/16.

However, the report did find the number of female chief executives in the health sector has increased from 10% to 60% since the last report, which is more representative of the NHS workforce.

June Milligan, commissioner for the Wales, Equality and Human Rights Commission, said: ‘Overall, we report that while there has been some progress, women are still significantly under-represented at the most senior levels in most sectors in Wales.

‘There is important work to be done to support access for disabled people to employment and public appointments and to tackle discrimination, wherever that exists.’
